Our Direction

"I was a long-distance caregiver for my mother; she lived 400 miles away. Luckily my brother lived closer and could handle many of the day-to-day questions that arose but as the eldest, I was often looked to as the lead decision maker. My mother was a very independent woman who did not welcome much help. She once confided to me that she was afraid that if she asked for or admitted that she needed help, that we would put her in a nursing home. We would never have done that except under the direst of circumstances and then we would have looked for a Green House home. I wish I had known then what I know now about caregiving. She passed away in 2020 in a nursing home where she was recovering from a fall."
